A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The event is being hosted by YUSU President Tom Scott in collaboration with Student Charities and Development Officer Jamie Tyler.
Scott said: "I'm a bit of a game show geek, so I've been looking forward to this for a while. We've got lights, buzzers, everything - it's going to be a great show."
Tyler added: "I'm really looking forward to the clash of the titans that staff vs. students promises to be and am working on warming up my vocal chords so that they are fully ready."
The staff team is currently set to be Prof. Ottoline Leyser from the Biology department, Dr. Philip Quinlan from Psychology, Dorothy McCaughan from Health Sciences and Pro Vice Chancellor for Students Prof. Jane Grenville, who is from Archaeology department.
The students who have been selected as part of University of York’s University Challenge team and who will compete against staff on Thursday are Laura Horton, a first-year History student who will captain the side, Tom Emmett, a second-year Music student, Peter Searle, a second-year Psychology student and Meriel Whalan, a second-year English student.
Whalan said: "It'll be interesting to see what the staff are really made of once you get them away from their own subjects. Also, I'm a simple soul, and I really can't wait to get to use a buzzer."
Whalan added: "I'm pretty thrilled to be on the team. My family love the show, and before I came to university, many a Monday evening was spent in fierce competition trying to answer the questions. So I think it's fair to say I've been dreaming not-so-secretly about being on the show for a while."
The team do not yet know if they will appear on the University Challenge show. They have handed in a form with a brief test and if they get selected will take part in the first round, which will take place in mid-June.
The event takes place on Thursday in V/045 at 19:30. For more information, check the Facebook event.
I'm going to put my bet on the staff, even though I hope the students win! Good luck to them; will definitely be there
