Goodbye Valcuin: but you might become Vantworth!

Bleachfields Construction
Bleachfields under constuction
Monday, 11th June 2007
Vanbrugh college has announced that it is well on track to put Valcuin to bed and house next years freshers in the new Bleachfields accommodation. But college chiefs have admitted that if there is a "shortage of rooms" then Vanbrugh students could find themselves being housed in Wentworth and Franklin House.

Despite big setbacks over the course of the year, provost Dr. Allen Warren has assured the Yorker that Bleachfields is on track to be ready for the 250 new Vanbrugh students next year.

The setbacks with obtaining planning permission meant that construction did not start until January, leading to a delay of almost four months. Now construction is being pushed forward by the college to avoid the repeat of "Valcuin" where Vanbrugh students were housed in Alcuin. However if they don't meet the deadline then this time we could see "Vantworth" - in Wentworth.

Ryan Bennett, Chair of Vanbrugh JCR said: "Although there have been some setbacks, when they happen, the contractors push forward to bring it back on target.” He did say that 12 security cameras is “slightly excessive” for the new site - especially for an area that is fenced off, and then requires two sets of keys to enter your room.

However three of the six blocks in Bleachfields will not be ready until January and even when they are will not be used for Vanbrugh students. Two of these are planned to house students who have returned from placements abroad, while the third will supply bed-and-breakfast style accommodation to non-students.

The new site aims to provide ensuite accommodation for all of the 250 students, while trying to maintain a green environment and an attractive campus. Provost Warren defended the site. He said: "The green, leafy environment will make it an attractive place to live and work."

The accommodation was planned as the solution to previous year’s problems where Vanbrugh students were housed in Alcuin accommodation, and were dubbed as Valcuin students, which lead to those residents feeling, isolated from the rest of Vanbrugh College.
