University forms swine flu response team

Swine Flu

Saturday, 2nd May 2009
In response to the recent outbreak of swine flu, the university has set up a Major Incident Response Team. The team, which will be convened by Registrar and Secretary David Duncan, is due to meet for the first time this coming Tuesday.

Duncan has said the team "will include representation from all the major services which we will need to maintain during a pandemic".

In preparation for this meeting, plans are already underway to try and prevent the university being hit by swine flu. The university has communicated with the Health Protection Agency and Yorkshire and Humber Health Protection Unit, and is following advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

They have also placed restrictions on travel to high risk areas, and contacted staff and students who are currently in these high risk areas.

Students who have returned from an infected region recently that are being treated for influenza-like viruses are urged to contact Student Support Services to help the university monitor the spread.

The university has also advised staff and students who might be affected with swine flu to stay at home, in order to minimise contact with others.

All staff and students are asked to exercise an increased level of awareness and hygiene, and those who are intending to travel to high-risk areas are urged to contact the university’s Health and Safety Department.

Further information about swine flu is available on the university website. Anyone who needs further personal assistance should contact NHS Direct on 08 45 46 47, or e-mail the university’s Director of Health and Safety, Tom Fleming, at tf513@york.ac.uk.

Does anyone feel that there is a vast overreaction regarding the swine flu thing? The manifestations of the virus are the same as that of the ordinary 'influenza' virus, and pretty much the same number of people die of the normal flu anyway... Or at least the data so far is insufficient to say for sure.

It seems to me like people simply need to be scared of stuff in order to go on day by day - whether it is swine/avian flu or terrorism. Whatever happened to just enjoying life without the paralysing fear of death?

They probably relish the chance to crack out the contingency plans and try them out.
