A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Anna Claire Younger, Derwent Vice-Chair and the event co-ordinator, explained: "Basically too many people were logged on to buy a ticket at 12 that the server couldn't deal with it." She added that the tickets would have sold out in less than an hour if the YUSU website and WorldPay, who processed the sales, had not had problems.
900 tickets were on sale at midday, but after 60 tickets were sold in the first four minutes Younger asked for another 250 to be put on. Regarding the rapid sale of tickets, Younger said: "I am so incredibly thrilled by this - I'm still in complete and utter shock."
Derwent Chair Joe Rankin offered similar sentiments, saying: "I'm delighted for the Committee and for Anna, who's been driving this for a long time now. Everyone's put in so much effort. For the ticket sale to go so well, and with the success of the amazing video too, their work is really paying off."
As was the case last year, a small number of tickets will be available at a later date. Younger told The Yorker that due to the website crashing, more tickets were sold than were actually put online, so once the Big D Committee knows exactly how many were sold they can work out how many more they can sell. Younger said: "Hopefully there may be another 100 or so available to buy soon."
Rankin said this year's Big D will be great, and added: "We've got some great acts, including the best York has to offer, and that's just the music. Clearly people have been impressed with the great plans for the whole event. I certainly am!"
Regarding the event, Younger said: "For those that have bought tickets, I promise that it will be worth it, both I and my committee are absolutely determined now to make this the best night York has ever seen and we will work completely and utterly tirelessly to achieve this for both the students and the charities that will benefit from this event."
This year's Big D is called "WonDerland" and the theme will be based on Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Simian Mobile Disco, Scratch Perverts and Utah Saints will all be perfoming at the event.
Anyone who missed out on a ticket should join the Big D 2009 Facebook group to be updated on when extra tickets will be available.
Absolutely fantastic news. It was a proud day to be a Derwent student (and Big D ticket holder).
