A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.

One of the event's Marketing Directors, Beth Fryer, described the carnival as "a self-funded, student run event". Fryer added that the event aims "to bring together the university and the city of York".
The Yorker spoke to a number of artists involved in this year’s carnival to find out about their sets and get their thoughts on the carnival as a whole.
Big Band Secretary Adam Wollman described their set as "an upbeat set of classic jazz and swing, as well as some more modern and quirky arrangements". Wollman added: "We're really excited to play the carnival. We love gigging and it’s always fun to play outside where you can really make some noise."
DanceSoc will be performing four different routines - contemporary, street, tap and salsa. The tap routine has been used before, and earned the society the winning spot at a competition in Loughborough.
The routines will run into each other and will last a total of 15-20 minutes.
They are also running a beginners’ street workshop, which anyone at the carnival can take part in. Vice-Chair Jeremy Lilley said this workshop "should be a really good chance for complete beginners, or those with some experience, to learn some dancing".
Regarding their set as a whole, Lilley added: "Dance Society are really excited about taking part in Sunday's carnival, we have a great set of dances planned which should really showcase our abilities to the whole of York well, and we would love for people to come down and support us."
Dan Hunter’s set will involve a selection of originals and cover songs including some golden oldies like Cat Stevens, and some more modern hits including Kings of Leon. Hunter said: "I consider my music to be a twist of pop-rock with a touch of folk, keeping things energetic and using the guitar as an instrument in its own right."
Regarding the event as a whole, Hunter added that it "is a fantastic opportunity to take the plethora of diverse talent that York can boast and bring it to the streets and to bring entertainment where it truly belongs - in front of the people!"
Talking about his own appearance at the carnival, he said he was "particularly excited about being able to look up from the mike and see the Minster, I can't imagine a grander setting at this level".

Dreamz has promised a lively set, and said: "My wacky style and lyrical delivery should intrigue people and put smiles on faces." He will be joined on stage by another artist called Cee-j. Dreamz expressed the belief that their different approaches on music "complement each other perfectly". The set will be electro, indie, lyrical and comedic. Dreamz added: "I am looking forward to showing people music that they definitely have not seen before!"
Dreamz will also be performing his debut gig at Fibbers tonight. Tickets will be on sale at Vanbrugh stalls from 12-2 today.
Band front-man Jon Pead told The Yorker that the band will be playing a similar set to the one that won them York's Got Talent last year. Pead added that the set would feature "a few cheeky covers, with the intention of humour over musical ability it has to be said, and a couple of heartfelt original tracks". Regarding the band’s appearance at the carnival, Pead said he was "looking forward to it, particularly our medley of cover tracks, which I hope the audience will get stuck in to".
Other performers this year include Battle of the Bands winners Magnapow!, DramaSoc, the University of York Concert Band and York Hornets. To find out more and get a timetable for this year’s event, visit the York Carnival website.
