Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.

The University of York has a plethora of hidden secrets and little gems scattered across its scenic campus.
After three years studying here, two of which I've lived on campus, I only just realised that the University of York has an observatory hidden behind Wentworth college. I began to think what other hidden secrets our campus holds and decided to make a short Youtube video about it. Little did I realise just how many quirky nooks and crannies are on our doorstep.

People were very receptive to the idea and offered so many different ideas. In the end, we had to whittle it down to the ten which we thought were the most unknown. Some other great hidden secrets we didn't have time to include are the Langwith drama studio hidden within a bridge, the psychology department fence and even B Henry's in Alcuin!
My favourite secret on this project has to be the Art space within Wentworth college. I never knew we had such a fantastic space to be creative in as well as access to so many classes and materials. It is definitely a place to visit when you need a break from studying and somewhere to express your inner artist.
Filming was an absolute joy, all done within a few hours on one of those rare sunny days we seem to be getting in York. As there were three of us, Chris, Sam and myself, we were able to experiment with different techniques. Editing was a lot harder: taking around 20 hours each. It didn't take such a long time due to any technical problems, rather the fact that we got the giggles when doing the voice-over, had many take-away breaks and got constantly distracted by clips on Youtube.
The video wasn't made to promote or sell anything, mainly in a hope that people would enjoy and learn something from it. If people do like it and it is well received then we may make more in a similar vein, who knows, maybe even "Ten Hidden Secrets in the City of York"?

Really really good video - the University should put this on their website, it would be great for recruitment I think!
One little secret I heard about the other day is apparantely a "house for the future" somewhere in Langwith, one of our CS lecturers mentioned it in describing applications of what he was lecturing. Apparently it has a talking fridge.
