Know your by-election candidates

YUSU
Tuesday, 26th May 2009
With voting for YUSU's by-elections underway, The Yorker takes a look at the students running for Racial Equality Officer and Chair of York University Media.
  • Racial Equality Officer

Deniz Ekren and Abrafi Kusi are both second-year management students. They are running because they want to ensure that ethnic minority students realise their full potential. Ekren and Kusi also want to establish closer links with the ISA, and encourage greater participation from home students in ISA events. Additionally, they want to work more closely with the Welfare Committee to establish greater racial welfare support.

Riku Heikkila and Harin Karunakaran study politics and sociology, and management respectively. Heikkila and Karunakaran want to re-introduce the BME mentoring scheme and work with the ISA and the university’s Equal Opportunities Office. They also want to run an anti-fascism campaign, and bring in guest speakers to talk about racial equality.

Mandi Madavo is a first-year history of art student. She ran for YUSU LGBT Officer last term with James Ball, alongside whom she is currently Derwent LGBT Rep. Madavo wants to establish closer links with all the university's cultural socities, and also wants to work with college welfare and international student representatives to ensure better training for race specific issues.

Michelle Osei-Owusu is a management student, whose main policy is an online forum where students can talk about their experiences; in particular their experience of suffering racial discrimination. Osei-Owusu wants to work to get this forum set up even if she is not elected as Racial Equality Officer. At Hustings last week, she also indicated that she wants to work with the ISA on International Week.

Samuel Westrop is a first-year music student and was responsible for founding the York Freedom Association Society. Westrop comes from a Russian Jewish family, and his key policy is "equality, but not forced equality". He wants there to be no discrimination, positive or negative, at the university.

  • YUM Chair

English student Anna Bucks has held several positions in YSTV, is the current video editor for Nouse and presents The Sex Education Show on URY. Additionally, she is an NUS Awards finalist for Best Student Broadcaster and has worked with Sky News since 2006. Bucks wants to increase funding for ratified media societies, organise talks from professional members of the media and encourage greater collaboration between ratified media societies.

Richard Mitchell is a long serving student of the university, having first started as a fresher in 2004. Mitchell is a first-year PhD student studying computer science and is currently a non-operational director for The Yorker. He is also involved with the GSA and is one of their three Events Officers. Mitchell sees himself as an independent voice, since he is not involved with any of the ratified media societies, and wants to rewrite the media charter to ensure student welfare is put before unscrupulous reporting.

Mike Regan is a second-year history and politics student and a former co-editor of York Vision. If elected, Regan wants to ensure that Nouse, Vision, URY and YSTV do not see a decrease in their funding. He has also promised to ensure that neither YUSU nor the university increase their control over the activities and output of ratified media societies.

Voting began yesterday and closes at midday on Friday. To vote, click here.

2004 not 2006. I know it's hard to believe that with a face like mine I could be that old, but it's true.

I knew that, whoops! Fixed

I'm fairly sure Regan is no longer co-editor of Vision - if he was, he'd be ineligible to stand.

Samuel Westrop ... his key policy is "equality, but not forced equality."

Riiiight, so what the suffragettes and Luther King REALLY should have been doing is saying "y'know, we don't want to rock any boats, but if it's too much trouble, can we have some equality please, if thats ok?". It basically seems he wants to sit around and do nothing except moan about how YUSU is controlled by "left wing radicals"

It'll be an absolute disgrace if he won. I was at the hustings at YUSU council and he got loads of basic facts wrong

#4: I don't know about which facts you are talking about, but Sam was hardly the only candidate for that position who got 'loads of basic facts wrong'.

Also, I'm one of 3 Events Officers for the GSA.

Multiple people got multiple facts wrong at hustings - if George saw past their few mistakes on the ISA front, he would see that most candidates were suggesting greater co-operation between themselves and the ISA (which I suspect George agrees with).

There is a difference, however, between getting things wrong that will be quickly taught to them and having a personality/policies that disagree with the job role on a fundamental level. This election should be about policies so vote based on what you think they will do instead of what they said they wanted to do (as you should, really, with all elections!)

George Papadofragakis: fine, I'll be more specific - he didn't know there was a Welfare Committee (he had to ask the chair), and he said that YUSU have a no-platform policy, which they don't. YUSU-fail.

Jason, I didn't say I didn't agree with them, I said Sam was not the only person to make mistakes. It would be unfair to single him out in this way without acknowledging that the other candidates made some omissions as well. I realise that nobody is perfect, least of all myself.

Westrop not knowing there was a committee for Equality, welfare and diversity was particularly lulzworthy.

To be honest, with the exception of Michelle they all had issues. The worst though was the pair (Ekren and Kusi?) that had to have 'BME' explained to them...it didn't exactly inspire confidence. At least the others only made mistakes about YUSU prodedures, not fundamental concepts!

How did Riku fair? I hear he's a really good public speaker

If I recall correctly, "Ekren and Kusi" spent half a second checking that BME was what they thought it was. Hardly even of note - and, frankly, I have only ever heard the term inside committees. None of the candidates are exactly "cliquey" - in fact Westrop would be the only person I'd *expect* to know that there's an EWD committee. People will learn, once they're in, and it really doesn't make much difference as long as their heart is in the right place and they have motivation.

I'm looking forward to the results though: it looks very close and I'll be intruiged to see if it goes down to a final round under STV!
