Mitchell withdraws YUM Chair candidacy

Richard Mitchell
Wednesday, 27th May 2009
YUM Chair candidate Richard Mitchell has released a statement announcing his decision to withdraw from the race.

Mitchell said he had taken this decision with "great disappointment" but due to pressures of time and other personal reasons, he has been unable to campaign as he would have liked to have done.

He added: "Circumstances have come to light which may seriously hinder my ability to assume the roles in the next academic year were I successful in these by-elections."

Mitchell wished the other candidates for the position, Anna Bucks and Michael Regan, the best of luck and said he hopes the winner does, "Almost as awesome a job as I would have done."

He thanked all those who nominated, supported and voted for him, and said that his supporters' votes will not be wasted thanks to the transferable vote system.

This is quite sad really. Richard Mitchell would have made a good job of the position, in my opinion. That's not to say Bucks and Regan wouldn't though...

I've also withdrawn candidacy for Rules & Revision Committee Ordinary Member, although that's not particularly clear from the statement I made.

I thought it was a tremedous shame when I read this earlier. As someone who sits with him on a couple of committees, I've seen firsthand how knowledgeable Mitch is, and how worthwhile his presence is on those committees.

As fantastic I'm sure he would have been as YUM Chair, I think it's particularly disappointing that he is no longer running for Rules and Revisions Committee. His work in helping to rewrite the GSA Constitution as Chair of our Governance Working Group has been particularly invaluable, and in that sense, I really feel that YUSU have potentially missed out on someone who would have done some great work in both roles.

Of course, all the best to all of the remaining candidates for both positions though. Thankfully, there are great candidates still running for both!
