A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The Yorker catches up with the remaining two candidates, giving them one last chance to convince you of their suitability for the role of York University Media committee’s chairperson before the polls close.
Anna Bucks: I’ve been an active member of student media since my very first week of university. I’ve seen campus media’s strengths, but also the problems that it faces. I want to protect, defend and strengthen campus media, and the role of YUM Chair will allow me to do this.
Mike Regan: I think it is more necessary now than it ever has been. YUSU have already held meetings with society heads to state their intention for further inhibiting the output of our ratified media societies, and I believe YUM will play a vital role in trying to prevent this from coming to fruition.
I am not afraid of a scrap if necessary.
AB: I’ll encourage all media societies on campus to work together. I have experience across a range of media, helping me to understand their specific problems. I’ve also worked at Sky News for three years, which means I’ll bring a sense of professionalism to the position.
MR: I am not afraid of a scrap if necessary. During my time as editor of Vision there were a number of times when it seemed as though YUSU and the media were against each other, and this should not be the case.
AB: The Media Charter is out of date. It refers to the Societies and Communications Officer, which won’t exist from the next academic year. Since the Media Charter was drawn up, a number of other media societies on campus have been ratified by YUSU. I think the most immediate change that needs to be made is to re-define which media societies have signed up to the Media Charter. Only after it has been updated can we look in detail at the charter itself.
MR: I believe the media charter fulfils its purpose of setting out some rough guidelines for campus media organisations and the considerations they should make. However, I believe further inhibiting the activities of the campus media must be avoided.
I’ve seen campus media’s strengths, but also the problems that it faces.
AB: YUM refers to those media societies that have been ratified by YUSU and have agreed to adhere to the Media Charter. As organisations such as The Yorker don’t fall in to this category, YUM doesn’t technically refer to them. However, this is not to say there is no chance of a potential relationship in the future.
MR: Its role is naturally limited, as The Yorker does not have a stake in the students' union. YUM must seek to establish where exactly The Yorker fits in and make arrangements for its access to student representatives and its access to campus events.

Mike Regan - do you even understand the issues surrounding trustee responsibility and student welfare? I hope Anna Bucks wipes the floor with you.
Mike Regan had better win this; Anna Bucks sounds bloody clueless...
Mike Regan's campaign is based entirely on anti-censorship. This is all well and good but Anna Bucks will fight this corner as well as many other issues which Regan seems to know nothing about or even that they exist at all.
Well voting's over now, so we'll just have to wait and see
To be honest, #2, Regan's answers were shockingly poor. Especially considering that during his time as Editor of Vision he chose to ignore YUSU and ended up facing the trustee board with potential legal problems and he *knows* that the media charter won't change to clamp down on media freedom.
Also, Anna Bucks is integrated well in three different media societies out of four - so I suspect that she's not "bloody clueless".
Both candidates are fine; Regan's poor answers here won't have changed the results anyway so it'll be interesting to see where Mitch's 2nd preferences go as they could well be the deciding factor.
For "the four" - read "the big four". Don't forget Filmmaking Society and Haus.
Neither of which are in YUM.
The YUM Chair doesn't even have the power to change the constitution, she's got no idea. I hope Reagan wins
What are you on about #8? Where did she say she'd change the constitution? I suspect you're the one who has no idea what they're talking about.
Anna's the only one with the experience to successfully chair YUM - all of Regan's campaign material seems to go on about the newspapers, and forgets URY and YSTV, which are as just important as Nouse and Vision are.
As I said about Racial Equality; both candidates have experience with York media - both are great journalists and know what's going on. It could be argued that Regan will favour Vision or that Anna will favour the rest - but it's irrelevant because their job is to represent media on Council and to chair meetings, which they would both do well. Plus voting closed....
So we'll find out at 6pm who has won, and I'm certain that the winner will be a fantastic YUM Chair!
To my knowledge Filmmaking Society isn't a part of YUM - should it be?
Ten minutes till the results then... Methinks Anna will go through, as those who voted for Mitch first woul have probably given their second vote to Anna. Anyway this should be an interesting year for YUM.
I just hope whoever wins doesn't let URY get away with claiming £200 for pens or whatever they tried last year. Cheeky blighters.
