York Apprentice 2009: day one

Apprentice Launch 2009
Wednesday, 3rd June 2009
York Apprentice 2009 was officially launched late Monday evening by the Mayor of York, Cllr. John Galvin, when the York Entrepreneurs were able to donate over £3,000 to charity.

Also present were Lady Mayoress Valmai Galvin, Director of CETLE Tony Ward, Syed Ahmed, participant of the Apprentice UK series 2006, Jill Burnett, Sherriff of York, Tony Burnett, the Sheriff’s Consort, Chris Henshall, the Pro-Vice Chancellor for External Relations, and a representative for the Newlife Foundation, the chosen charity for the event.

With that many guests together with such talented and bright teams in the room, there was bound to be some inspiring moments, and there certainly was.

Apprentice challenger Syed Ahmed, who founded SA Vortex, an eco-friendly technology company, advised the teams and in particular the team leaders “not to let anyone of your team members feel left out, to inspire your team and work together towards one goal.”

He went on, saying that “the two most important things to being a successful entrepreneur are self-belief and the energy, drive and hunger to succeed.”

President of York Entrepreneurs, Suraj Gangani, had nothing but praise for all the teams for raising such a large amount for Newlife.

The first challenge for the 16 teams that made it through began on the Monday morning, where they were briefed at 9.15am. Teams were set a basic sales challenge, in which they were given a variety of jewellery which they had to sell and raise as much money as they could.

All the profits made were donated to the Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children. Teams had until 4pm in which to try and sell as much as they could, and this task proved challenging with all the teams running around campus all day long.

Team Vivacity said that “it was hard work, but enjoyable at the same time. It was for charity, and that motivated us to do well.” When asked about their strategy, they added:

“Campus was too saturated so we kept two of us on campus whilst the other two went to Heslington, the primary school, and even knocked on doors around campus to sell items.”

Their charm, charisma and determined approach seemed to have done the trick, for they emerged as the winners of the challenge. The total revenue raised from all the teams amounted to a staggering £3300, and the total profit made was £1870.07. Vivacity made £430 in revenue and £271.05 in profit, with second place team Calibre making £320 in revenue and £187.70 in profit.

The teams who were eliminated from the challenge were the Mighty Ducks, Sphere and Embla, but they still managed to make £150 profit between them. The teams that moved to day two were as follows:

Jocks, Ivy Cottage, Calibre, Vivacity, Rat Pack, High-Flyers, BB4E, mBezel, 2 Snakes a Fox and a Horse, Potatoheads, Apex, and Fresh Air. Keep checking The Yorker for updates on the Apprentice.
