In line with new legislation, the university must put-up warning signs around campus or face a £2000 fine. A student caught smoking inside will face a £200 fine in court, or a £50 on-the-spot fine from July 1st onwards.
But the university has also announced that it plans to enforce the new legislation in “substantially enclosed” buildings – ones which don’t have full walls. This could include smoking in bus shelters and in the most extreme case 2m near to a building.
Roshni Mehta, Vice Chair of Alcuin and in charge of welfare said: "I think anyone, be it student or non students should be punished if they do break the law and if the fine is £50, then that seems fair."
But Mehta remains skeptical about whether the new legislation will have the desired impact of reducing smoking. She said: "If outdoor provisions are made for smokers, then I think people will be more inclined to smoke. It becomes even more of a social activity and I don't think smokers are going to break the habit especially if their friends are smokers too."
Policies are being prepared which will discourage smoking within two metres of a University building.
A university spokesperson said: “Public open spaces are exempt, so people can still smoke outside and in the covered walkways, although policies are being prepared which will discourage smoking within two metres of a University building.”
Currently smoking is counted as the number one cause for preventable illnesses, accounting for 106 000 deaths a year.
