The Pigeon Detectives to perform at Freshers' Ball

liveandloud
Thursday, 22nd September 2011
YUSU has revealed The Pigeon Detectives as the third and final headline act for this year’s Freshers’ Ball, Live and Loud.

The band, who have just released its third album, Up, Guards And At 'Em!, and performed at Leeds and Reading earlier this year, will join DJ Fresh and Rizzle Kicks at the event.

DJ Fresh reached number one in the UK charts this year with 'Louder' and has just completed tours around the country and the United States. Rizzle Kicks, nominated for Best Newcomer Best Hip Hop/Grime and Best Video at this year’s Mobo Awards, are also performing, and their hits include 'Down with the Trumpets' and 'Heart Skips a Beat' with Olly Murs.

YUSU has shaken up this year’s event, which will have a festival theme and is at £26 including an online booking fee, as it seeks to create a new style of Freshers’ ball, moving away from the formal occasions in the past and bringing the ball back on to campus.

In a video blog revealing the identity of the final act, YUSU President Tim Ellis admitted: “Last year for Big Bang not everything worked quite as well as it possibly could have so we have changed things up. It’s going to be absolutely epic.”

The event will end Freshers’ week, taking place on Sunday, October 16 from 8pm in Central Hall, Vanbrugh and the Roger Kirk Centre. Doors will open from 5pm and there will also be a silent disco in a tepee and a firework display over the lake, as well as a 3D disco in Vanbrugh with images on wall screens, food, drinks and many more bands.

Quote It’s going to be a fantastic event. It’s only three weeks away now and I can’t wait. I hope you can’t either. Quote
Tim Ellis, YUSU President

Excited about the Pigeon Detective, Ellis said: “They are one of the best live shows you can see. Personally this is the act I am most excited about.

“It’s going to be a fantastic event. It’s only three weeks away now and I can’t wait. I hope you can’t either.”

During Freshers’ Week, YUSU is also putting on a Comedy Night, on October 15, giving students the “chance to see some of the rising stars of UK Comedy in Central Hall” and there will be the annual Viking Raid through York City Centre.

Each of the university’s colleges will also hold its own Freshers’ Week, with events including bar crawls, quizzes and much more.

Tickets for all events are available online from the YUSU SHOP.
