Throughout September on Tuesdays and Fridays volunteers will be on duty to take calls from 8am to 8pm, whether by phone, email or by dropping into the Nightline flat, in exactly the same way as during term time, offering a confidential listening, information and sexual health supplies service for York students.
Aaron Berry, one of Nightline's Public Faces, told The Yorker: “We're very proud of this. Thanks to the enthusiasm of our dedicated volunteers, our service will be to open during the holidays for the first time since we opened in 1972!"
This historical opening has been organised with the support of the GSA. In a statement, the assocation said: "The GSA is delighted that Nightline has been able to offer this service, which will greatly benefit graduate students. The GSA also hopes to work with both Nightline and YUSU to increase Nightline's future 'out-of'-term' provision."
Noting the number of postgraduate and undergraduate students who stay in York during the summer break, Nightline wanted to give these students the opportunity to use the service during the increased openings.
The extra nights were made possible through volunteer dedication and contributions made by the GSA who envisage postgraduate students benefiting greatly from the extra support out of term time.
YUSU Welfare Officer Ben Humphreys expressed support the move, saying: "Nightline provides an invaluable service for all students during term time - its great to see it being able to extend that provision into the holidays. It will be a vital lifeline to many students who have stayed in York over the summer."
Opening the flat during the summer aims to make the service more accessible to as many students as possible, and provide an additional layer of welfare support to students at this time.
Nightline is a student-run listening, information and sexual health supplies service, open every night of the university term from 8pm to 8am. You can contact Nightline in three ways:
