YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Carr has left his PhD programme at the University of York and taken a job at the University of Kent, working at improving their postgraduate representation.
Rhodes explained to The Yorker that the GSA executive decided an appointment was necessary "Due to the need for someone to meet with University figures and outside agencies". Rhodes added: "Although Dan's responsibilities have been spread over a few officers, I have taken the lead on our internal restructuring and co-operation with YUSU, along with continuing to plan our upcoming welcome week".
Carr was originally voted GSA President in the summer term of 2008, but resigned before taking the position. He was then re-elected GSA President in February at the association’s second by-election of the academic year.
The results of the GSA's original elections, held last October, were met with questions of legitimacy. Some members were unable to vote due to Edge bar being at capacity and there were claims that there had been a misunderstanding over the eligibility of candidates for Treasurer.
Rui Huang had been elected President in October, but was disqualified from the December by-election for mass emailing. Luke Martin was elected President in this by-election, but was also disqualified after breaching election rules by mass-emailing via Facebook.
Carr assumed the role of Acting President after this double disqualification, and opted to run for the position on a permanent basis at the by-election in February. He received 109 of the 148 votes cast and subsequently worked with the rest of the GSA committee to propose a new constitution. The constitution was passed in June after 143 out of 144 members voted for it.
New Acting President Rhodes thanked Carr for his time and dedication during his presidency, and said: "It is unfortunate that Dan Carr has to leave at this important time, but the processes which are integral to the GSA moving forwards, which were set in motion while Dan was President, are continuing as planned under the current GSA officers."
Pretty sure with all the freshers week stuff online, and with freshers week so soon, that this shouldn't really be the front page story?!
Seriously? You don't think the fact that the GSA has YET another President is a serious story? Freshers' Week "so soon"? ins't it in a month? And what about all the (new) postgrads surely GSA is important to them?
I agree with both points here, freshers stuff is more important as I bet the incoming freshers are using this more than current/incoming postgrads.
That said, after a ridiculous year, the GSA had quietly gone about its business recently and I assumed that it had got its act together. Who knows?
Let me get this right though, Dan Carr was elected President in the Summer of 2008, though I believe he didn't actually run for it (nobody did). Then he resigned. Then after the huge cock up he decided to 'help' out by accepting the acting presidency. He then used that platform to win back the presidency. He then resigned.
Fantastic
To make things a bit clearer:
Remember, that the GSA President's position is only a part time paid one. That means that once Dan had realised PhD study wasn't for him, he was effectively expected to live off the 16 hours per week that it paid - very unrealistic.
Dan stayed around to make sure all of the big reforms we've made this year were beyond doubt, before taking a job offer he really couldn't refuse.
Dan Carr worked very hard as GSA President. He took over at a very difficult time and did a good job sorting out the constitution mess. It's a shame he's not able to continue in the role, but once he decided not to continue with his PhD he didn't really have much choice. I wish him the best of luck in Kent.
The GSA would do well to get a president even half as good as Dan Carr next year. He was always measured, rational, knowledgeable and remained calm and in control despite the huge amount of pressure upon him from all angles, most of which was and will never be reported on.
It was a pleasure working with him and I wish him well.
