Claudia search takes police to Cyprus

Claudia and Father
Friday, 18th September 2009
On the six-month anniversary of Claudia Lawrence’s disappearance, North Yorkshire Police have announced their search for the missing Goodricke chef has led to them sending a team to Cyprus.

Speaking at a press conference, Detective Superintendent Ray Galloway said a team of four officers went to Cyprus earlier this week to speak to a man who was in England the day Claudia disappeared.

Det Supt Galloway added that North Yorkshire Police would be interviewing around ten men in Cyprus, and that there had always been a link to Cyprus in the investigation. He explained: “The last text message that Claudia received at 9.12pm on Wednesday 18th March 2009 was from a friend in Cyprus. It is not known whether Claudia ever opened this last text message.”

Claudia is known to have visited Cyprus several times before and this last text indicated that she was planning to go there again. Det Supt Galloway said the suggestion that Claudia could be in Cyprus is “not outlandish”, however as her passport is in her house she would “had to have gone by other means”.

The man who was in England when Claudia disappeared has given the police an account of his movements on the 18th March, and this account has been corroborated by other information that the police have.

Regarding these developments, Claudia’s sister, Ali Sims, said: “Six months on and we are no closer to knowing where Claudia is or what happened to her. As a family we can't face another six months of this. So far, despite extensive press coverage, we are no further forward. We are hoping that this time it's different.”

Det Supt Galloway said that one of the difficulties of the investigation is the fact that this link to Cyprus is still one of a number of scenarios in terms of what could have happened to Claudia. However despite this and the complex details of her personal life that have come to light, he expressed hope that “with the continued assistance of the public, we will achieve the breakthrough that we need.”

As part of the investigation a media bus will now travel the York area with a special video wall on one side. Claudia’s sister and her father, Peter Lawrence have both recorded messages for the video. A fresh photograph of Claudia will also be circulated in an attempt to keep her in the public eye.

Since Claudia was last seen on 18th March, there have been more than 1,200 calls to police hotlines and North Yorkshire Police have searched hundreds of properties. As revealed by The Press, the investigation is also one of North Yorkshire Police’s most expensive in history, with over £500,000 spent in the search for Claudia. The case is being treated as a suspected murder.

Anyone who has information to help the inquiry is urged to phone North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 247 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
