Steve Rogers, who has worked at the club with owner Andrew Elliott since 1982, said: "We are called The Hub at weekends as we now provide a 'hub' for all local DJs to perform at weekends so we can put on different types of music to suit all tastes and genres."
Rogers continued, "Wednesday will always be a student night as it has been and nothing will change there. We have done some internal alterations which we hope will give it a different look and a new feel to the place."
Elliott explained that these internal alterations involved a re-jigging of the downstairs room, with the DJ stand moved and new flooring put in. He added that more discounted drinks would also be available on a Wednesday.
These announcements come after weeks of uncertainty amongst students, a number of whom were concerned with how a rebranding might affect the popular student night. One rumour circulating was that the club has come under new management, however Elliott dismissed this.
Elliott was both positive and protective regarding Wednesday nights at the club, saying: "Wednesday nights are very important to us - they're our longest running night and as long as I'm here, Wednesdays will stay."
Tonight marks the first Ziggy's night of term and the club is certain to be packed with students, in particular freshers and sports clubs. As always, Ziggy's will be open from 10pm and students will be offered free entry upon production of a valid NUS card.
Next week will also see the return of alternative nights at the club, with the "Fringe" Alternative Music Society hosting "The Asylum" there from next Tuesday. "The Asylum" will offer two floors of alternative music and will be running every Tuesday during term time.
Students who do wish to see "The Hub" on a weekend may yet get to do so for less. Elliott told The Yorker that he was planning to make the club's weekend nights more student orientated and offer students cheap entry, including discounted entry to "Heaven's Above" upstairs.
