James College leads in College Volunteering Cup

YUSU volunteering
Sunday, 20th November 2011
James College won the Mega College Challenge in YUSU’s annual Volunteering Week to take the lead in the College Volunteering Cup.

The challenge saw the university’s colleges go head-to-head to muster the most volunteers and James College came out on top, positioning them at the top of the leader board for the College Cup, which is presented at the YUSU Awards in the summer term.

The college volunteers joined forces to knit blankets for premature babies and Amber Fuller, who advertised the challenge and helped to get volunteers involved, expressed her delight at the event’s success.

She said: “There were 10 from James, and a handful of people from the other colleges. The turnout was very positive!

“Not having that many talented knitters amongst us, it was hard going at first, but I like to think we succeeded! Basically, each of us attempted to knit a patch, which the charity Kascare (aid for AIDS orphans) then proceeds to make into a blanket. Some attempts were more successful than others...”

About James College’s victory, she added: “It's a great volunteering start to the year, and hopefully the next James volunteering rep will end up winning the cup!”

The next Mega College Challenge will take place next term but colleges will run their own volunteering events before the end of this term and there will be a food collection at the end of term in all colleges.

Throughout Volunteering Week YUSU also hosted a range of events for students, aiming to raise awareness about volunteering, what YUSU does and opportunities it offers, as well as developing the skills of current volunteers.

Events included volunteering talks, CV enhancing sessions with the Careers Service, information drop-ins, Pick A Project – a fair showcasing volunteering opportunities available on campus and in the local area, and Speed Volunteering – speed dating with volunteering projects to work out which project is for you.

YUSU Volunteering Officer Hannah Brearley said: “Participation varied form event to event, but I was impressed with the success of the week overall.

“The two most popular events were the Speed Volunteering and the Committee Elections. I was so pleased at the elections turnout. It was great to see loads of different people wanting to get involved in volunteering.

“We also did some publicity stunts and events which were a bit more fun, like giving out party bags full of sweets, playing with a parachute on Vanbrugh paradise and handing out free tea.”
