A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The event will end Freshers’ week, taking place on Sunday, October 16 from 8pm in Central Hall, Vanbrugh and the Roger Kirk Centre. There will also be a silent disco in a tepee and a firework display over the lake.
There will be a non-formal festival theme as YUSU offers an alternative to the traditional Freshers’ Ball at York Racecourse, priced at £26 per person including an online booking fee.
DJ Fresh reached number one in the UK charts this year with 'Louder' and will perform at the university on the back of tours around the country and the United States. Rizzle Kicks, nominated for Best Newcomer Best Hip Hop/Grime and Best Video at this year’s Mobo Awards, are also performing, and their hits include 'Down with the Trumpets' and 'Heart Skips a Beat' with Olly Murs. More acts will be revealed over the next few weeks.
On the official Facebook page for the event, on which over 1,000 people are listed as attending, YUSU said: “Are you ready for the biggest and best event that York has ever seen???
“This isn't your typical Freshers' Ball. This isn't your typical campus event. This isn't something you can afford to miss.
“Three huge venues with three jam packed line-ups, five bars, a silent disco in a tepee, a huge firework display off the lake and over 3000 York students. What better way to finish off your Freshers' Week?”
During Freshers’ Week, YUSU is also putting on a Comedy Night, on October 15, giving you the “chance to see some of the rising stars of UK Comedy in Central Hall” and there will be the annual Viking Raid through York City Centre.
Each of the university’s colleges will also hold its own Freshers’ Week, with events including bar crawls, quizzes and much more.
