A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The new recycling plans, which are expected to be implemented by October 2007, have been hailed by YUSU as the successful result of “years of nagging from previous Eco reps”. The new systems will be run college-wide and it is hoped it will spread to academic departments.
The new scheme will see kitchen's equipped with four colour coded bags. These will then be required to be emptied up to four times weekly by students into corresponding bins that will be located by each block. These bins will then be transported to the recycling depot by contractors where they will be taken away and recycled.

The new plans are the solution to several years of recycling problems. The main issue was that a college's recycling was dependant on JCR Eco Reps who often encountered injuries by carrying heavy crates or cutting themselves on broken glass.
YUSU Environment Officer Tom Langley said the new system will be more user-friendly and will greatly increase the amount of recycling on campus. He said, “Uni recycling will take off like a rocket in the next few years”.
The new bags will be lightweight and intend to make carrying the recycling to the bins much easier and safer. Concerns were raised by Goodricke College representatives that in smaller kitchens bags will take up valuable space. It has been suggested that bags should be hung on the back of doors or stored in a seperate area.
The final designs are set to be completed in week 9, after liaising with campus services.

Posters which will instruct students on the new system, including what can and cannot be recycled will be placed in each kitchen.
The main hurdle the scheme has to overcome is that students are required to carry their own bags to the locally situated wheely bins. YUSU Eco reps said they will be contacting college provosts to ensure that cleaning staff and students are aware of their duties. Provosts are to be encouraged to remind their students that not participating in the scheme will be classed as a violation of the cleaning contract students sign before moving into University accomodation.
