Who will look good on the dancefloor?

Jason and Claire
Contestants getting ready
Wednesday, 2nd December 2009
Here it is again, York Come Dancing, where campus celebrities take to the dance floor to raise money for RAG (and provide endless amusement to us fellow students in the process).

Come Sunday night, 11 couples of YUSU, University and Society hotshots will be waltzing, tangoing and quickstepping their way to campus stardom (maybe) from 7pm in Central Hall: brought to you by Dancesport, in association with RAG, YUSU, YSTV and Nouse.

This year there is an interesting variety of candidates, from YUSU President Tim Ngwena, to Mr York 2009 Gruffudd Jones. YUSU LGBT Officer, Peter Warner-Medley, York Sport President Emily Scott, YUM Chair Anna Bucks, YUSU Democracy and Services Officer Lewis Bretts and YUSU Campaigns Officer Jason Rose will also be dancing on the night, alongside YUSU RAG Officer Zoe Stones, Steve Miller, head of Door Safe, current Alcuin JCRC Chair Ollie Hutchings and campus star Ed Lewis-Smith.

Jason Rose has admitted “the concept of York Come Dancing was always going to be appealing - it's a chance to raise a large amount of money for charity by trying something new”, while fellow competitor Ed Lewis-Smith – a man, in his own words, “used to Central Hall” – told the yorker he had loved the idea of “an event that raises lots for charity simply by me and others dancing about a bit”.

All contestants have emphasised how much they have enjoyed working toward the event, despite the hard work and aching limbs. The fact that the whole event is for RAG has simply spurred the competition on, with Rose emphasising that “the important thing is making the most money for charity as possible”.

Smith said “It has definitely been worth it!” and that he thinks the night will be “a fantastic evening's worth of entertainment” and Rose “would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity”. Steve Miller commented that he believes “Dance Sport have done really well to create the event, and its for a great cause.”

Asked about nerves, Rose admitted, “Everybody's getting a bit nervous” now although Smith maintains that his only sense of nerves comes from the “the fact that most other competitors have had private lessons, and they may have had a few helpful tips that I've missed out on.”

York Come Dancing had its first successes last February, when Tom Flynn and Rosie Portas wowed judges and audience alike with their Quickstep and over £800 was raised for various RAG beneficiaries.

According to fellow contestants, this year Gruffudd Jones is a possible favourite to win, dancing the American Smooth with Dancesport “professional” Abigail Fenton. Tim Ngwena and Peter Warner-Medley are also tipped for potential success.

If that weren't enough, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Students, Jane Grenville, will even be dancing in the demonstration section of the show. Our hosts for this year are Luke Malkin and Fionna Tod, with Joel and Sarah Chapman and Sarah Magill from the Rock Academy of Dance and Tom Flynn, last year’s victor, judging the contestants.

This is the last week to buy tickets. They are available online at http://www.yusu.org/shop?societytickets for just £4. Dancesport members can also get tickets for just £3.50 from Dancesport lessons & practices.

So head down to Central Hall for what promises to be a highly entertaining evening, and hopefully a successful fundraiser for RAG.
