A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The day began once more with a briefing at 8.30am, where the day’s task was revealed to the teams.
The task, set by the York Entrepreneurs’ Society, was to sell a product around York and make as big a profit as possible, before returning at 4pm.
Three products were available: leg warmers, digital watch wristbands and bottle coolers. The order in which teams chose their product was determined by their performance in the previous day’s task.
The task was designed to challenge teams’ ability to identity a successful product, as well as their ability to sell it well.
Each team was given £80 worth of stock, meaning that they started the day with -£80 profit. Products could be sold at any price above cost price as teams attempted to sell as many items as possible to make the most profit overall.
The top two teams from yesterday, Paradigm and Econ Boys, failed to repeat their success today and left the competition. Four other teams were eliminated with them: Terry Tubbs, Aspire, Team Sheen and Encore, who were given a second chance after their elimination yesterday when Sapientia dropped out due to exams.
This sees eight teams progress to tomorrow’s task: Ignite, Zenith, Bi Winning, Team Cream, Ingenuity, The Four Profiteers, Locus and The Three Marketeers.
India Perry, one of the York Entrepreneurs events directors, said to The Yorker “I’m really pleased with how the day went. Everything went really smoothly and the teams were very enthusiastic.”
“We were a bit nervous about the limited market on campus but teams managed to sell in bulk to shops too, which was great,” she added.
Seven out of the fourteen teams managed to sell all their items and the largest profit made was over £250, with the smallest being less than £10.
Team Ingenuity, comprised of members Charlotte Lewis, Lauren Walker, Sean Harrison and Catherine Paritt, chose to sell bottle coolers and made a profit of £30 overall.
They spoke to The Yorker after their task today. “It was more challenging than yesterday,” admitted team member Charlotte Lewis.
They felt limited on campus but managed to sell many of their items to a shop in town but thought the teams who chose the digital watch wristbands were more appealing.
“We had to push really hard,” Lewis added, “but it was fun!”
A moment of confusion at the results saw Ingenuity unsure if they had progressed to the next round.
“It was horrible!” Lewis said. “It was like finding out your exam results wrong and getting them all over again!”
They did progress however and will join the other seven teams for another early start tomorrow at 8.30am as they take on their next task.
Check The Yorker tomorrow for details of the next task!
