Panto in double booking confusion

Dick Whittington - 28/01/2010
Panto continues despite setback
Sunday, 31st January 2010
Members of PantSoc, eager to rehearse Dick Whittington in preparation for Friday’s performance, were dismayed to find their rehearsal time reduced earlier this week.

On Tuesday, PantSoc turned up to their rehearsal in Central Hall, only to find a Chemistry exam going on instead. There had been no notification from the room booking service, or the facilities manager for that campus zone over the double booking. As a result, the rehearsal time was shorter than expected; leaving less time for the run through, and preventing members from setting up the set.

Co-choreographer Richard Barker told the Yorker “With chemistry occupying central hall we lost many valuable hours of rehearsals during production week. With the panto already moved a week forward than normal, pressure was on and with set only put up on Wednesday because of chemistry being there, on opening night the cast were still very much getting to grips with their stage”

Cast member Merel Deinema who plays Gapyear Gabi complained that “It meant that we could only start building up the set on Wednesday which really delayed out rehearsal schedule”.

It appears that there are two different booking systems for central hall, with performances using one and exam bookings using another, which led to the confusion. Whether any changes will be made in the wake of this remains to be seen.

This happened a lot of time last term with the student cinema with lectures being organised over them even when they booked the room first. A change in this system, even if it means a cursory e-mail, would definately be a step forward.
