A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The inevitable star studded charity single that Simon Cowell is bringing out is not the only musical effort to raise money. Closer to home the Matt Postle Quartet played an afternoon gig, named ‘Jazz for Haiti,’ last Thursday in the Courtyard. They seem to have gone down well with student Tom Fitz-Hugh telling the Yorker, ‘I’m sure they won’t say this, but they were pretty damn good!’ With a combination of chilled afternoon jazz and some more Bossa-Hispanic influence, they raised about £280 in a few hours. The organisers, Matt Postle and Dave Smyth, will donate this to the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
Local jazz musicians, the resident bands of the Black Swan, the Phoenix and the Old White Swan, are all planning a gig next Monday 8 February as well, for which the donations will once again go towards the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal.
On Sunday Chris Etheridge, George Papadofragakis, David Levene and Jason Rose organised a walk for Haiti trekking from Selby and back, much like last year’s walk for Gaza, somehow persuading 28 others to go as well. As tactful and polite as ever Jason Rose told the Yorker ‘the majority of us completed a 28 mile trek to Selby and back, totalling over 12 hours of arduous walking,’ when asked how many managed to complete it. So far they have currently raised almost £2,400 for the Mercy Corps Haiti Earthquake fund.
Not only York students, but also two of their most popular hangouts, the Evil Eye Lounge and Ziggy’s, organised events. The Evil Eye has donated all the bar-proceedings of Wednesday 20 January. If you’re not too tired after Wednesday night in the big Z, then you should definitely check out Ink in the Hub (Ziggy’s basement for those of you who cherish tradition). Contrary to the Wednesday night cheese, there should be some awesome electronic music on. All donations will go to Oxfam.

SIX of York's resident bands will be playing for just £6, every penny of which goes to charity!
The Walk has now raised £2,848.23 and £299.85 gift aid for a total of over £3,148 - thanks to everyone involved. Keep giving and praying for more international support for situations such as this.
