YUSU Academic Affairs Officer, Charlie Leyland, has been confirmed to be in the running for the role of National Union of Students Vice President for Higher Education in the organisation's elections.
With nominations now under way, the popular YUSU officer has begun to rally support from students up and down the country for this top position with the NUS. In an attempt for nationwide backing, the YUSU officer has made her candidate status public on Facebook, setting up a group to convey her message and intentions for the role with the ultimate aim of encouraging students to vote; on the group, she states: “My aim always has been, and will be to lead student-driven change”.
Leyland has encouraged users’ feedback and requests from students as to what she could bring to the job: “If you have any thoughts at all about what issues you'd like to be addressed, how you'd like to see the NUS Higher Education zone developed, and what action you'd like to see from NUS in the Fairer Funding campaign, get in touch”.
Since being elected in 2008, Leyland has gone on to occupy key responsibilities within YUSU. Having previously been Academic and Welfare Officer, she ran unopposed last year for her current role as Academic Affairs Officer, whilst also representing YUSU at NUS conferences; both of which should stand her in good stead for the campaign.
The NUS, formed in 1922, lobbies government on behalf of students as well as standing up for their rights. Should Leyland get the position she will play an important role in NUS campaigns against university budget cuts and rises in Top Up fees.
Leyland’s manifesto of principles and policies will be up on her facebook group Wednesday 10th February to view.

Good luck to her, she has put in dedicated hard work at YUSU ! GO on CHARLIE
