RAG members kidnap YUSU officers

RAG week 2010
RAG week excitement continues
Thursday, 11th February 2010
Today the University of York’s sabbatical officers including President Tim Ngwena, Welfare officer Ben Humphrys, York Sport Emily Scott, Student Activities officer Rhianna Kinchin and Academic Affairs officer Charlie Leyland were kidnapped in a stunt designed to promote Rag Week.

A small army of daring RAG committee members assembled outside of the YUSU Office today, intent on putting the student union's finest on a gruelling march through campus. The money-raising scheme, which had been suggested by Rhianna Kinchin, backfired spectacularly on her as she found herself tied up in the bedlam that ensued.

Despite pre-kidnap nerves, the RAG committee finally worked up the courage and impetus to carry out their plan of extortion. Utilising the fire escape of the student union office the team of antagonists stormed the workspace of the officers and demanded that they [the union officers] cease and desist. Whilst most of the officers came willingly, there were some members of the party who were not so forthcoming.

Although the prisoners of the RAG committee seemed to be well looked after, they were nonetheless prevented from attempting several breaks-for-freedom by the sharp-eyed committee. Ben Humphrys, the union’s welfare officer, became highly troublesome at times with him and union president Tim Ngwena breaking free of their captors on many an occasion.

The promise of freedom from their shackles was offered constantly en route to the Courtyard including the promise to be set free if enough money was raised. With shouts of “We want our ransom” and other such declarations of extortion, money started to come into the buckets of the ever hopeful RAG committee. The diners at Vanbrugh dining hall seemed more surprised than any one as the party landed upon their midday food consumption and were asked to dip into their pockets.

RAG, standing for “Raising and Giving” is trying to raise as much money as possible for various charities and this week. They are hoping to have raised a lot of money through events such as the Viking Raid, Rocky Horror Rag Drag and tonight’s Mr and Mrs York in the Courtyard.
