A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
YUSU LGBT officers Peter Warner-Medley and Elanin Vince told the Yorker "We should always remember what the LGBT movement has grown from and why and how we're all here now. We're hoping that we may show some of the terrible stories that our community shares but also that we may celebrate the lives and achievements of LGBT people throughout history."
The planning has been done by YUSU’s LGBT committee with talks, discussions, lectures and film screenings all taking place on campus. Events kicked off with the screening of “Beyond Hatred” in the James JCRC on Friday week 4. The French documentary followed a family seeking justice for the horrific murder of their son in a homophobic attack.
Monday week 5 saw a talk and subsequent discussion about the AIDs crisis and the continued NHS ban on gay and bisexual men who have been sexually active from giving blood. Tonight Professor Sue Mendus is giving a talk on the decriminalisation of homosexuality in G020 at 7pm. Mendus is Vice President of the British Academy and has given talks all over the world on tolerance.
If you can’t make that there are plenty of events still to come. On Monday week 6 members of the LGBT committee are holding a talk on LGBT history, exploring various aspects of it across cultures and time. On the Wednesday in the James lakeside JCR students will be able to see the classic film “Boys don’t cry”, starring Hilary Swank as Brandon Teena, a role which won her an Oscar. The week will finish off with a talk about the trans movement in LGBT.
Week 7 begins with a look at the portrayal of LGBT people in the media through history to the present day. The event promises to fun with youtube to hand and a google image search of the word ‘lesbian’. To round off the month, LGBT committee members will be talking about their LGBT heroes from the famous to the unknown.
