A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The delay in releasing the app, which was promised to be ready for Roses, is due to problems with registering YUSU with Apple as a charity. After feedback from the forty testers on a range of devices on the app, it will go public.
The app is intended as an additional communication channel between Union officers and students. If it is a success, Ngwena hopes that the advantages can be showcased to the university and a more integrated system could be introduced, which would allow university services such as timetables, library lending, student records and more all happen from mobile devices.
With around 35-40% of students currently using mobile devices to access information, and the planned expansion of wifi access across campus, the opportunity to communicate with students via their mobile devices is one that Ngwena hopes will be explored and developed over the coming years.
Twenty new features have already been built in after internal testing. Current features include access to university news, twitter feeds and blogs from the Union officers and a ‘Duck of the Day’ photo album.
Screen shots of the app can be viewed on the YUSU website.
