Luminar refutes Nouse closure claims

Gallery Tru Logo 02
Neither The Gallery nor Tru will be closing according to a Luminar source.
Tuesday, 23rd February 2010
In response to a story from Nouse suggesting that Tru and The Gallery face "imminent closure", The Yorker has received an email from Luminar Leisure refuting the claims.

Nouse reporters emailed Tru Nightclub last week requesting information on the possible closure of the two clubs, both of which are operated by Luminar.

Customer Relations Manager Kirsty Shute sent the following response through yesterday, which did not reach Nouse in time for publication: "Your enquiry has been forwarded to me. I can advise you that Luminar have no plans to close either of our venues in York. Regards".

Nouse's article, which made the front page of today's publication, noted that an anonymous source close to a member of The Gallery management staff had informed them that the club would be sold within the next six months unless there was a significant turnaround in the profitability of the venue. The article suggested that the refusal of Tru and The Gallery to meet with Nouse regarding this claim reinforced the rumour.

The article quoted figures from the Luminar Group's recent financial report, noting that the company as a whole had made a loss of £300,000 in the six month period prior to 27th August 2009. Though The Yorker was unable to obtain figures that deal with Tru and The Gallery’s finances more directly, an anonymous source purported to be close to the clubs suggested that neither club was in any immediate financial danger.

The source also dismissed a claim from Nouse that weekends at Tru and The Gallery were more profitable than student sessions, arguing that in the current financial climate students offered the York nightclubs far greater business than local club-goers.

Student club nights for the University of York occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Tru and The Gallery respectively, with students also likely to visit the clubs on a Sunday night. The Gallery's Sunday "VIBE" session is seen by many students as a second University of York night, whilst the majority of customers at Tru's gay-friendly "Lick" session are students from either the University of York or York St. John University. Both clubs also have student nights for York St. John, which occur on Mondays at The Gallery and Wednesdays at Tru.

Of course they'd say that, they're about to go bust! "have no plans to close" doesn't mean they aren't going to, just means they don't want to.

Worst case scenario? They get bought out by another company.

Life goes on, Trusday continues without a blip, and nobody outside the campus media notices.

This article contains no substantiated evidence and I'm guessing Nouse would have printed the article with or without the email - it contains no additional information, despite denying the claims; which very clearly does not refute any of the information contained in Nouse's article. Of course they would deny it: it may affect the amount of students who are currently visiting Tru and The Gallery (although not enough, ostensibly...)

Looking through Nouse's articles and this one, it seems neither have anything more concrete than pure speculation. Both articles quote unnamed sources who have connections with management, so information in both articles should be taken lightly. The simple fact that Luminar's share price has performed badly has been blown out of proportion and been attributed to Tru and Gallery when no link, above speculation, has been shown!
