Green Week

Green Week 02
Organisers hope to raise attention about climate change
Wednesday, 24th February 2010
This week, YUSU Environment and Ethics have teamed up with York People and Planet to bring students a week of awareness-raising events on climate change.

The theme this year is “Climate Change and Us”, with particular emphasis on personal involvement and what we can do personally, however small, to make a difference. YUSU Environment and Ethics Officer and key player in the organisation of Green Week 2010, David Clarke, told the Yorker that, “we want to discuss what our role is in the climate change challenge; as individuals, York students and UK citizens”.

The week is an annual series of events organised to raise awareness of issues that YUSU Environment and Ethics believe we should be informed about and involved in. This year, not only representatives from student societies and University of York management have been invited to take part in the week, but also speakers from the UK government. David Kidney MP, the Minister for Energy and Climate Change, will be delivering a speech on Thursday.

Clarke also said: “we'd like as many people as possible to take part”, emphasising the frustrating fact that “too often, environmental issues are dominated by a well informed, committed few” without wider engagement from the student body. Clarke believes that “Green Week is an opportunity for people with no previous experience or knowledge to find out more” and get involved with issues they may have been previously unaware about.

“We don't all need to become environmental activists and live in trees,” Clarke says, but he emphasises the fact that “we're all people who make choices. And climate change demands our consideration.”

Monday saw a Q&A session with the Pro Vice Chancellor for Research, Professor Alistair Fitter, who is the man responsible for the University of York’s 10:10 pledge, and E&E have much more planned for the rest of the week.
