Sports centre director to retire

Thursday, 21st June 2007
Colin Smith, Director of Physical Recreation of York University's sports centre, is set to retire.

Smith has fought for more that 30 years to put the development of sports facilities at the top of the university’s agenda.

Smith said: “My biggest challenge was trying to convince the University of the value of sport”. The University has only recently committed to vast improvement of on campus sports facilities.

'The Tent' has made a huge difference to college sports teams and plans are being touted for Heslington East to include a long awaited swimming pool, suggesting to many that the University may finally be investing sport on campus.

Rumour has been rife around campus that Sports Centre membership fees are due to increase in the next academic year. Smith was an outspoken critic to this, saying: “Prices should not go up”. Smith is keen to stress that facilities should improve without students having to pay higher membership fees.

AU members are currently required to join the sports centre at a cost of £25 to use sports centre facilities. Student sports centre members pay £120 on top of this fee for 12 months gym membership.

Campus consensus suggests that improvement in staffing levels and facilities should be mandatory and not directly reflected in the cost burdened onto students and sports clubs.

Quote Every year there is a new intake with as much enthusiasm as the previous Quote

Smith is yet another important figure of the university that has decided it was time to retire. James College provost Ken Todd and School of PEP secretary Janet Jenkins are all leaving the University before the start of the next academic year.

Smith did however hint that he may stay near to the university longer: “Every year there is a new intake with as much enthusiasm as the previous.”

Students can only hope that his successor will be as dedicated to his job and give as much to York students and community as Colin Smith did for the past three decades.
