A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
I decided to run because I'm passionate about student media and I really wanted to be part of student media at York. Being heavily involved in some of the best student media in the country is something which I really am passionate and committed to, and so hopefully I can help to maintain the high standards that our media has.
The most pressing issue has to be that of the Media Charter. Whilst in office, I would hope to work with YUM and YUSU to clarify what YUM itself is and what it does. The relationship between YUSU and YUM needs to be clarified better as well. In general, the charter is an outdated document which was written when no one knew what YUM's job was going to be, and the media societies worked in a very different way. Now, URY and YSTV have become news heavy alongside Vision and Nouse, and this is something that needs to be addressed when amending the media charter. I'd hope to push forward some of the changes needed to be made to the media charter whilst in office.
This would have to be an issue I would discuss with YUM and YUSU. The media charter is unclear as to the stance either side should take on this. However, I feel that the media is an important watchdog on Union and University activities and so should be able to write what they wish. The only censorship that I, personally, think is valid is when there are welfare issues involved. This needs to be better clarified though, as sometimes welfare is taken too far. It's a difficult situation though as YUSU funds YUM as well as giving it legal backing - how can they give legal backing without getting to see the papers before they go to print? So as I say, it's really something that needs to be discussed.
In terms of student media, I believe that each YUM society has an important role to play. The papers get a lot of coverage, but only once every 2 weeks or so. Their coverage is influential though. YSTV and URY have been getting massive hits on their shows recently and so they have a huge role to play as well, especially when it comes to live coverage. YSTV is one of the few student TV stations that does live coverage of events, which is impressive. As a whole though, I think the internet is going to play a massive role. Nouse's website gets a lot of hits, URY have recently started putting podcasts of their content online, and the vast majority of YSTV's coverage is online as well.
Ummm, ha not sure really! I suppose, and relevant to recent events, it has to be some of the things Dave Hansen said on URY - "J.C. was a good egg. Shame about what happened." And of course: "I'm going to decrease decline by increasing reduction."
