The Environment Agency issued 80 standard flood warnings and 11 severe flood warnings across the region over the course of the day.

Conditions are set to be much drier today although temperatures should remain below normal and showers will persist until the end of the week, when the full cost of flood damage across the north east should be known.

The Environment Agency has labelled the weather conditions as 'phenomenal.'

The agency's flood expert, Phil Rothwell, said: "We've had a sixth of the annual rainfall in 12 hours.

A first year student who braved the weather told The Yorker: "This is ridiculous it's June! I can't wait to get away from the English weather and get some sun."
