A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Alexander, a Labour Councillor, has been selected as the Parliamentary Candidate for York Outer meaning he could soon be representing York in Parliament. Not only this, but if he gets elected he may well become the youngest MP in the country.
He is determined to keep promises he made to York Students during his reign as YUSU President from 2004-05.
“I’ve represented students before, I know what it was that they wanted when I was there and I’d like to get that across on a different level. I haven’t forgotten things I’ve said before when I stood for President, I said I wanted a central venue and I will see the job through. Unfortunately not all councillors know what students want. I do.’
Students' apparent apathy to politics was demonstrated at the last local election where there was a disappointingly low turnout. Alexander is keen to explain that students should be voting, not only for a party but also for the university and themselves.

“I think it’s important to make students realise that never in the history in York has an ex-YUSU president, who successfully fought against University admin, been able to make a difference to their time at university.”
A key issue Alexander fought on whilst President and one which he continues to discuss is that of a central venue. He said: “A central venue not only makes it safer, but it keeps student from being rowdy in the village, which benefits local residents."
Alexander said his biggest achievement was making sure each room had an individual internet connection, something the University had previously said was impossible and something that no doubt benefits students today.
“York Outer is a marginal constituency, all students are automatically registered to vote, and voting on campus can help get things like that central bar venue.”
Students need to realise that if they vote on campus rather than at home then they make a difference at University level, incl. central venue.
Alexander is aiming to become MP for York Outer, an area which includes Fulford, Bishopthorpe, Heslington and Heworth.
But Alexander was not liked by all while at university. Apart from ushering in the controversial "media charter", Alexander allegedly sent an email to the Guardian trying to persuade them not to nominate York student newspaper Nouse for an award.
Whether Alexander becomes an MP could fall to the current crop of York students, as Gordon Brown is believed to be making more noises toward a snap election this autumn.
I hope we have other options
