Asfahani seeks changes to York Sport membership

York Sport membership is in the process of being changed, YUSU Sports President Sam Asfahani has revealed.

Currently York Sport membership costs £40, which is split between York Sport and the Sports Centre, and grants students access to the sports centre and external facilities. It also includes gym membership and reduced rates for court hire.

The share of money received by York Sport helps to fund club grants and pays for the core hours in the sports centre that all on-campus sports get for free.

However, some of the university’s sports clubs, such as octopush and polo, have to pay for off-campus facility hire but still pay the York Sport membership and Asfahani said this is something he is keen to change.

“York Sport membership is not a fair deal for off-campus sports who never use campus facilities,” he said. “We are currently working on removing the fee for these sports. We have asked for now that off-campus student athletes hold off paying it while we work through the practicalities.”

Alongside York Sport membership, athletes must also pay to join a sports club. Some of the more popular clubs, including football and cricket, have set their prices at almost £30 for the year, making many hobbies expensive for students.

Asfahani said that ideally York Sport membership “simply doesn’t exist or we charge a much lower membership, such as £10, that goes to York Sport to help in funding clubs and facilities”.

“Next year we are looking at a far more comprehensive solution as students coming in will be paying £9,000 and will be less keen to part with their money,” he added.

“I have no doubt that removing a £40 barrier to participation will make trying new sports far more attractive to students. I'm hoping that not only will we have more club members but that also when they are part of the club they may be more willing to invest in things like kit because they've saved £40 previously.

“There is nothing set in stone, and the above is solely my plans. Discussions will be on-going with the university and I hope they continue to be as receptive as they have been so far with sport.”
