A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.

Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The aim of the event is to showcase the talent of University of York students to an audience of distinguished members of the film and television industry.
The event will be hosted by the University’s chancellor Greg Dyke who himself has played an active part in the British television industry over the last few decades. The head of department Professor Andrew Tudor said in the university press release that ‘now is an ideal moment to showcase the Department’s achievements and look forward to its exciting future’.
3rd year PhD student Nik Morris helped to produce the promotional video which will be screened at the event. He talked of the ‘great opportunity that this has provided’ due to the film being shown to such an ‘influential audience’.
£24m has been invested in the department, to provide it with a state of the art scenic stage theatre, a black box theatre, a screening room and professional TV broadcast studios with audio and editing equipment suites. The department will move to its new facilities in September of this academic year.
The department is privileged with strong connections to the media industry, having had visits from people such as Anthony Horowitz, Penelope Wilton, Samuel West and Alan Ayckbourn. In gaining York’s TFTV department a higher profile in the industry, we hope that this event means that there will be much more to come.
