A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The atmosphere was festive under the hot sun this afternoon, as students from Goodricke and other colleges gathered for what promised to be an amazing day.
Goodricke’s JCRC put up stalls selling cupcakes, Goodricke merchandise, “Guess the number of sweets in the jar”, henna tattoos and drinks, alcoholic and non, causing everyone to be quite merry from the afternoon onwards.
Goodfest attracted what looked to be hundreds of students. Evening events included the University’s Samba band, which was a huge crowd pleaser, and a “bachelor auction”, where Mr. Goodricke Tom Platts raked in the second highest bid of £33, and JCRC Treasurer James Bowdler received the highest support from his 'Styclets', and was sold for a whopping £60.
Dan Hill, who was one of the bachelors up for auction and was “sold” for an impressive £14 exclaimed, ”I can’t bloody believed I got bidded for by a guy!”
Students also paid good money to see current Goodricke JCRC Chair Tim Ellis, Former Chair and Democracy and Services Officer-elect Dan Walker, and even Goodricke’s Provost Jane Clarbour sponged today, all in the name of charity of course.
According to Ellis, it was his “least favourite part of the day”.
However, in all he described it as an “amazing day” and said that it was “great seeing so many students around in this fantastic atmosphere”.
“I am immensely proud of the JCRC, and want to thank our Provost Jane, our College Administrator Gill MacDonald and our Facilities Manager Mandy McKechnie, without whom it would not have been possible to organise today,” added Ellis.
Goodricke’s open weekend seems to have finally put the college on the campus map, as it had previously remained elusive to non-Goodrickers.
First-year Goodricker Chris Sherer told the Yorker, “It was nice seeing everyone mingling, really shows off the college spirit!”
Another Goodricke first-year Hannah Kate Morris described the day as a “drunken fabulous mess”.
A large portion of the proceeds from the day will be going to RAG, including proceeds from the bachelor auction, sponging the college celebrities, and the college RAG reps selling cupcakes and doing henna tattoos.
A total of over £450 pounds was raised for RAG today.
The festivities continue tomorrow, 12pm Sunday with an ice cream van, a jazz band and even more stalls such as a tuck shop, face painting, giant darts and hoopla. There will also be a display of local children’s paintings along the famous Yellow Brick Road.
Just to correct, James Bowdler got the highest auction bid of £60.
Sorry there was a misunderstanding, it's been changed now, hope it's okay! Thanks for pointing it out.
One of the best events I've been to at York, helped partly by the weather perhaps, but genuinely top notch!
Kudos to Tim and the rest of the JCRC.
