The York Entrepreneurs Society successfully ran two mini challenges on campus last week, giving students the chance to win up to £50 as the Entrepreneurs advertised this year's York Apprentice.
Between 12pm and 2pm, the Entrepreneurs had two stalls set up, with each stall offering students the chance to win a £25 cash prize. The first stall, which was set up outside Vanbrugh, challenged students to guess the amount of pennies in a jar. The challenge proved so popular that the stall stayed open until 3pm. Nearly 80 people took part in this challenge, with no one guessing the exact amount of £26.33. However the winner was then declared as the person who had guessed the closest, which was Gemma Robson with a guess of £26.89.
The second stall was set up outside the library, and asked students to rank Richard Branson, Lord Alan Sugar, Simon Cowell and the Beckhams in order of wealth, based on the Sunday Times 2010 Rich List. Over 70 people took part in the challenge, with around 20 people getting the right answer. These names were selected from a tombola by the Enterprise Promotions Officer for the University of York, Chris Simpson, who commented that "this is a fantastic way for students to get involved with enterprise and business from the grass roots level". The chosen winner was John Sutton.
Co-President of York Entrepreneurs Matt Freckelton told The Yorker: "It was a really great day to see so many people excited about what we were doing, we had over 130 people take part overall and just goes to show that not all business is about coming up with ideas. It can be fun as well and that's what we try and do in our events."
The events have been set up to raise awareness for this year’s York Apprentice, which will take place in Week 7 of this term. Teams of students will battle it out during the week through BBC Apprentice style challenges, with a prize fund of £1,200 available. Applications for the event close at midnight tonight.
The Apprentice 2010 will kick off with a launch event on 7th June that will be officially opened by the new Sherriff of York, Richard Watson. Mike Southon, who is best known as the Beermat Entrepreneur, will be giving a key note speech, and also in attendance will be several Pro Vice Chancellors and a delegation from the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship.
Last year’s York Apprentice saw a record number of applicants, and helped the Entrepreneurs raise £3,300 for The Newlife Foundation.
