A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Described by the Facebook page as a “weeklong beer-drinking fiesta”, the event will be going on all week in the James College bar, starting with the launch party on Monday, 31st May. The launch is set to be a great night, with a BBQ, the popular James Quiz and live music provided by Chris Johnston. Jim Bulley, resident campus DJ, will also be around.
YUSU officers-elect Nick Scarlett and Dan Walker commented on the upcoming event. Catching up with Scarlett in McQs, the Student Activities officer-elect told The Yorker that he is “very excited” about the week, which is being held in a “great bar”. Scarlett went on to explain that it was “good to see something different on campus”. He also wants to remind people that it would be a “great warm-up” for the upcoming Halifax foam party. Equally earnest, Dan Walker, Democracy and Services officer-elect, also expressed his enthusiasm for the event. Walker praised McQs in his YUSU election Hustings speech last term, and told The Yorker last night: “I’ve never stopped loving McQs, so I’ll definitely be taking a break after exams with a pint by the lake”. David Sharp, otherwise known as “Sharpy” or “the McQs man”, said he reckons the week is “going to be amazing”.
A collection of well-known and more obscure beers will be served over the week, giving students access to a wider beer-drinking experience; but Sharp told The Yorker that the beers will be “rotated throughout the week – so you need to come to more than one night”. Nonetheless, this doesn’t look like it’ll be a problem, when once you have tasted all eight pints; you’ll be entered into a prize draw. There is also a promotion, which means if you buy seven pints over the week – the eighth will be on the house.
A first year student, when asked, admitted that the week would be “a nice opportunity/excuse to try a much larger range of beers than we usually get on campus.”
So why not go along, take some time out to relax from exam stress and enjoy what the festival has to offer?
The week will end on a high note, with the all-day James “Dash ‘n’ Bash” event on the Friday.
