Interview: Union Council Chair Charlie Rowley

Charlie Rowley
Newly elected Union Council Chair
Monday, 31st May 2010
The Yorker interviews newly elected Union Council Chair Charlie Rowley.

Newly elected Union Council Chair, Charlie Rowley, this week spoke to The Yorker talking all about his responsibilities, intentions and ambitions for the role.

In what can be described as a relaxed and humorous interview, Rowley’s main message was to “get more people involved” and to make the union meetings “much more open”. Although UGM’s are currently open to all, he appeared enthusiastic at the prospect of encouraging higher attendance and more student opinion.

Rowley described the role as important, telling The Yorker that because of the role’s independence from YUSU, he will “have to be strong” when passing motions at chaired committees. Reiterating his intention to get such meetings to attract a diverse range of students, Rowley stated that he wants to bring “fun to an often ‘boring’ role”. An entertaining yet serious approach to the role is sure to see greater attendance.

The main changes that he wishes to make are to create more “transparency”, spreading UGM and committee messages campus-wide, and putting forward the idea of posting minutes online for students to view.

In his closing, Rowley exclaimed that he wants to “get everybody involved”. Ambitious as this may be, the characteristic that shone brightest from the lively question and answer session was his zest for the position, which he hopes will inspire other students.
