14 teams of four were shortlisted to partake in today’s first challenge- an auction. Teams were briefed at 9 am today about their task and were given only six hours to blag and come up with products and services to be auctioned off later that evening.
The York Entrepreneurs’ Society Co-President Matthew Freckelton told the Yorker that he was initially worried that there would not be enough publicity for the auction given the short time frame. However, this faded when he heard that over 100 people turned up for the auction, some in support of their friends, others just for the chance to bid for some very interesting things!
Among the items up for auction were a ticket to Arsenal’s opening game along with a football t-shirt, paintball and laser quest tickets, Salvation and Gallery passes, free dinners, a slightly legally dubious mountain bike, which in fine print could only be claimed a few weeks later and a dartboard without darts.
The auction raised £1100 in total.
According to Freckelton, the auction challenge was only incorporated into the York Apprentice this year, and given its success, might be “a staple” for the coming years.
The eight teams to pass through the first hurdle are Team Big, Team Zeal, Team Success, Team 4 Sugars Please, Team Laboratorium, Team We’re Going to Keith chegWIN, Team Forte and Team Fiat.
Siobhan Ward-Farrell of Team 4 Sugars Please, who came in second today, described the first day as "adrenaline filled and competitive".
Team members Paul Oakley and Kate Sanders thought it was “highly fulfilling” as well and that their team was definitely “the ones to watch”.
Team Laboratorium, which consisted of Maria Morrison, Lottie Alves, Siobhan Crittenden and Shaan Bassi, also thought the day had been “real fun”.
As a group of Biology students, the team joined the York Apprentice because they want to show that business “isn’t only for business for management students”.
“Common sense is what’s important in business,” said the team, who did not feel disadvantaged in any way as Biology students.
“Except for our long nine to five lecture hours!” quipped the team.
The Sheriff of York Cllr. Richard Watson was present today at the York Apprentice launch to officially open the competition.
Michael Southon, known as the “Beermat Entrepreneur”, who is a prominent entrepreneur and author was also present to give his entertaining keynote speech on why the Beatles were the greatest entrepreneurs in the world.
The eight remaining teams are expected to be at Cetle tomorrow morning at 7.30am for a briefing on their next task, which President Scott Murphy hinted might take them out of little old York.
