Moe Hashim, a third year Electronics and Music Technology student, was left with a "small 'Z' shaped scar" on his left hand. "I've been telling people I was attacked by Zorro", he said. Hashim and three friends were attacked at 3am Wednesday morning on their way back from a night out in the popular student venue Toffs.
It looked exactly like a pirate sword you'd get from the Disney store
A man ran at them from behind and they first thought they were faced with someone walking home from a fancy dress party. After being told to hand over their phones and wallets, Hashim's first reaction was to challenge his assailant on whether the weapon was real. "It was a long curved knife which looked like a pirate sword", he said, "It looked exactly like a toy you'd get from the Disney Store".
The attacker, who was wearing a balaclava, then took a swipe at Hashim, slashing his hand. "He tried to stab me again and then ran at one of my friends. I didn't really see what happened afterwards because I was trying to check whether I was bleeding any more."
It all happened really quickly
Another of the students threw his wallet at the robber to avoid further casualties. The attacker then ran back towards town. "It all happened really quickly, it only took thirty seconds or something," Hashim said. One of the students claims that the assailant took off his balaclava which allowed him to see his face and therefore provided a description to the police when the students gave their statements an hour later. Hashim also provided a drawing of the sword. The other students, all members of Derwent College, were left unharmed.
Earlier the same night, around 12:30am, a 19-year old man was also attacked on Arthur Street by two men wearing balaclavas. A police spokesman said of the two attacks: "Due to the similarity in nature and the timing of the incidents, there is a strong possibility that they are linked."

This is awful. How does this happen in York?
Students get mugged more often than you might think, they just rarely end in injury.
To be fair though, York is a lot better than a lot of other cities. I've never met more polite chavs.
A lesson to anyone thinking of walking through tang hall at night.....
