Parents comforted by tributes to James

The parents of student James Alexander Ednie Matthews, who passed away last Wednesday, have said they feel comforted by the tributes his friends have left on his Facebook page.

Police and paramedics found James at his York home on Seventh Avenue at 1:25pm, after he had collapsed. Attempts were made to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at York Hospital at 2:01pm. James was a 23 year old third-year student in the School of Politics, Economics and Philosophy and a member of Halifax College.

James' parents, Robert and Janet Matthews, told York Press that the tributes left on his Facebook page show that James "was a well liked and very popular lad" and added, "they are very comforting at this time". James will be at the Cooperative Chapel of Rest on Cromwell Road in York from 10am on Tuesday and all day Wednesday if any of his friends would like to go and say goodbye.

His supervisor, Professor Neil Carter, said: "James was a very likeable young man who made great efforts to get to university and was determined to succeed in his studies." A university spokesman added: "We are greatly saddened by the tragic death of James Matthews. He was a third-year student in the School of Politics, Economics and Philosophy and a member of Halifax College. We extend our sympathies to his family at this extremely distressing time. The university is offering support to his friends here."

Police investigating the death arrested two men aged 28 and 36 in connection with their inquiry, on suspicion of supplying drugs. The men have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Anyone affected by James' death is invited to email the Open Door Team at open-door@york.ac.uk or pop in to see them on campus.
