A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.

A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Robert Davies, 20, who was in his third year studying chemistry, disappeared after a night out in York on Saturday the 22nd of September, after becoming separated from the group of friends he was with.
A missing person’s investigation launched by the police, and helped by Robert’s friends, was ended tragically by the discovery of a body the river Ouse on Monday the 1st of October. The body was later formally identified to be that of Robert Davies.

Robert’s funeral, which took place on Monday the 15th of October, saw a massive turnout of friends and family members from both York and from his home in Manchester. Over 40 students traveled from York by coach, along with a number of lecturers from the chemistry department.
Dr Paul Walton the head of chemistry said a few words about Robert during the service. He said: “Telling Robs Year about the tragic event was the hardest thing I have had to do in the 15 years that I have been at York.”
Robert's father, Tony Davies, told how much Robert enjoyed his time at university, and how much he enjoyed playing his new piano, which him and his wife had got for Robert's 21st birthday. He said: “Rob was a son who any parent would have been proud to have.”
His sister Helen, also has a very moving recollection of the last time she saw Robert. She said: “He came over and gave me a hug and said have a good time at uni - I didn’t know how precious that time was.”
The service included some of Robert’s favourite music, including a piano piece by his favourite classical composer Chopin and the song ‘Whatever” by his favourite band Oasis.
During the service comments written by Robert’s friends from university were read out. One commented on the memories of Robert being “nothing but football” while others recalled memories that they had shared with Robert.
Friends of Robert, along with the Chemistry Department are planning on planting a tree and laying a commemorative plaque in the university grounds in memory of Robert.
