Outrage as ftr ten-pass bus ticket is ditched

FTR: Controversial ticket changes
Thursday, 18th October 2007
YUSU will lobby First for fairer bus ticket pricing after the public transport provider pulled its ten journey ticket.

By Andy Dolan

Instead, the company now offer bus users a termly pass for £99 or a full academic year pass for £269. Passes for £13 are available from Your:Shop but expire within a week, unlike the ten-pass tickets which lasted 3 months.

A meeting of Union Senate agreed that Campaigns officers should draft a letter asking for more choice and value for students. If no progress is made the prospect of petitioning or even a boycott was raised.

The ten journey tickets offered ten single trips for £11 and remained valid for three months. The offer was popular because it offered flexibility and meant that travellers didn't have to worry about having the correct change for ftr ticket machines, now no longer in use.

It is believed many first years have bought termly passes without realising how close campus is to the town centre.

Goodricke JCRC Chair Ben Wardle said: "I think it's disgraceful there's not a student bus pass, I think it's ridiculous. We have got places in town where people need to be. I have a friend who does archaeology and he has to go to King's Manor."

The change in pricing is believed to be part of an attempt by the company to standardise pricing across the country.

Otherwise weekly and monthly passes are available from Your:Shop at £13 and £44 respectively.

The ftr Number 4 service runs between Acomb and the University. It has stops at the city centre and York rail station.

The launch of ftr stuttered when ticket machines failed and there were gaps in the service schedule. The buses were hailed as "the future" of public transport but have been widely criticised for persistent technical problems.

Interesting that First claim to be attempting to standardise their bus prices with the massive £13 a week charge when in Manchester students can travel on a bus for a week for just £3. York is simply a rip-off and I think the council need to put pressure on First to stop taking advantage of us!

I'd rather have a normal bus that had normal priced tickets than this over-hyped over-priced "ftr".

'Manchester students can travel on a bus for a week for just £3'??? What buses have you been getting in Manchester? From my experience the average weekly student ticket ranges from 8-12 pounds, depending on the company. An all day ticket can cost more than £3. That said yes, Manchester is cheaper than York with termly passes costing around £50.

Firsts hefty prices in York can easily be explained by the fact that they have effectively had to double there wage bill for the number 4 service with the introduction of conductors on a lot of the buses to collect your money, and they don't have the economies of scale Manchester can take advantage of.
