A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
On the day, several students living on Farrar Street, approximately ten minutes from the city centre, reported items missing. The Yorker spoke to one victim, second year Rosie Peacock. She told us that she was burgled during the night while she was asleep. As the front door opens to her room, Peacock claims that she could well have been an easy target for such an attack.
The attacker, or attackers (it is as of yet unknown), stole an estimated £500 worth of valuables from Peacock, with her laptop being the most expensive item. But it was not the material loss that was of greatest concern to the Theatre, Film and Television undergrad. “When I woke up, and I realised what had happened my immediate fear was for my future safety”.
She further emphasised this obvious concern, “They could have done anything. In a way I’m glad I was asleep. I feel lucky that they were there to steal and nothing more malicious or harmful.”
The police have been around to investigate similar incidents that occurred on the same night, at two other properties in the same student area.
No prints of evidence were found by the CSI teams investigating the crimes, prompting Peacock to offer this simple but important advice to students across York, “No matter what the situation, make sure all doors and windows are locked.”
