A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Walking on to campus on a typically cold and wet November afternoon, even I could sense that there was something a bit different. It was still and silent. In fact, too quiet. The ducks weren’t even squawking. That’s a sure sign there’s something a bit different happening.
As many of you know, tomorrow is the National Demo against the government’s proposed fee hike. Plans would indicate that the Tories appear to want a return to education for the elite: almost trebling caps to £9,000, less funding and less tax the sooner loans are paid back, the student has become a versatile market to be exploited, unfairly. While one can agree that Labour’s aims for university may have been somewhat naïve, this turnaround not only shocked many who believed that a Lib-Dem coalition would hold back the war on costs. Many are angered and shocked that the student has become the person to bear the brunt of a need for cash in a harsh economic climate.
So we do what we students do best: we argue and protest. (After all, that’s what we are encouraged to do in what many already consider to be expensive seminars. At least the government has here provided a practical use for the skill.) The plans to march through London are testament to the fact that students nationwide are passionate and dedicated to their courses and the availability of such provisions for future under and post graduates alike.
York is no exception! Our vivacious students prepared for battle in Viking costume and aimed to raise awareness both down south and across campus. Today saw swaths of disgruntled scholars form on Vanbrugh Paradise to start the week’s proceedings. Undergrads were encouraged to take up position with banners promoting the cause; against all torrents of wind and rain. The groups moved around campus, inciting a frenzy of support from passing students in their wake. Though brief, the event marked a poignant moment for contemplation of how many young adults have their futures balanced in the hands of so few. Events continue throughout the week and again tomorrow, we urge students to take up position at Vanbrugh Paradise at 1pm for another march in this vain.
Watching the throng disperse, there was still a unity that held these people together. A cause. Imagine that multiplied by hundreds of universities nationwide, added with hours of tormenting travel and a mix of crazy costumes and one cannot even begin to anticipate the atmosphere in London. Whilst many head to the capital, we hope that those on home turf represent all the same and add some York spirit to such a relevant issue.
