Afshar has been selected as one of two new non-party political peers. The Appointments Commission has selected her to provide expertise in her field to other members of the House of Lords.
Afshar teaches Politics and Women's Studies at the University as well as writing a number of books and being a visiting Professor at the University of Strasbourg. In 2005 she was awarded an OBE for her work in equal opportunities.
I shall certainly be fighting for equal opportunities for minorities and for women as I have always done
Afshar's areas of expertise include health and development. She is also involved in feminism in Iran. Her books have discussed topics such as Iran and Islam.
Professor Afshar sits on many notable committees, including the UN, British Council, as well as founding, and chairing the Muslim Women's Network. She is also a governmental advisor on policy relating to Muslim women.
Afshar expressed her delight at being named, "I was really very surprised and very honoured that to be considered as a 'People's Peer', in fact I was lost for words when I was told. I shall certainly be fighting for equal opportunities for minorities and for women as I have always done," she said.
The Appointments Commission reports to the Prime Minister to suggest suitable candidates.
I hate to be critical, but the quality of writing in this newspaper is really disappointingly bad. Haleh Afshar is to become a "peer in the House of Lords". There's no other type of peer she could become. She is to be given a peerage, or she is to become a member of the House of Lords, but to say both in the same sentence is like saying "wet water".
regarding the peerage thing:
I personally would not have recognised that peerage is related to the house of lords (or vice versa) and now i know. Thankyou The Yorker
Apologies for my faux pas, although as the comment above suggests not everyone will know that peerages and the House of Lords are linked.
I've re-edited my article so it doesn't cause any more offence!

I wouldn't have known...then again i guess we can't all be as knowledgeable as Anonymous. I hate it when people who nitpick aren't accurate themselves though - The Yorker isn't a newspaper, it's a news website.
Much better
Ah, English students. Semantic specifists and lexical anomalies all.
I'm sure the person who left the first comment doesn't really "hate to be critical as they put it.
