YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The problems faced by University of York students when trying to use their student card as identity have been addressed in a motion proposed by Clare Walker at last Thursday’s Union General Meeting.
Walker lobbied for a more professional looking card with the University Crest replacing the duck. Also student details will now be clearly visible on the front, claiming that otherwise: "there is no point in having a current university card at the moment."
The motion has been passed with 491 votes for, 114 against and 33 abstaining. This mandates the YUSU officers to put pressure on the university to change the design of the card so that student details like date of birth and name are clearly visible on the front. However there will be no expiry date for legal reasons.
This motion shows that there are many students dissatisfied with the ID card that the University has provided, and that they want the improvements to be made. While the current card is accepted in York by the local clubs like Tokyo and Salvation, it is not recognised as valid by establishments outside of York because of its lack of expiry date, and up until last year, the lack of YUSU and NUS logos on it as well.
Despite having both a photo, the number and the date of birth of each student, the York card still fails to be recognised as valid I.D. Walker further pressed the point that: "if one is unable to use their student I.D. then they have no proof of student status. If it's their only form of identification, then they're unable to prove their age."
Now that this motion has been voted through, it is up to YUSU to decide how best to approach the university with this issue.
