A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
This revelation came about after two Goodricke students, Aidan Pilgrim and Casey Woodward stumbled across the 23 year-old Goodricke College resident’s incriminating files on the college’s intranet through the iTunes’ sharing folder in March 2009.
According to Pilgrim, who was at the time a first-year and resident of Goodricke College, the files had been “unguarded” and were being shared through iTunes under the username “Perseus Argadeus”. “They had all these disgusting names,” said Pilgrim, referring to the files he had found.
The duo took screenshots of the filenames and took them over to the porter, who in turn contacted the police. They later showed campus security how the files had been available but by then Wong had logged off.
The files were investigated and confirmed to be child porn by the police.
“Neither myself nor Aidan knew of Jonathan (and) neither of us listened to the files,” said Woodward, also from Goodricke College.
“I was surprised at first. It wasn’t something I’d expect to see at University! But I think we’ve done the right thing for everybody involved,” continued Woodward.
His sentiments were echoed by Pilgrim’s, “I have no doubt that I did the right thing. I am just glad he has now been found guilty and stopped.”
Other university of York students have also expressed outrage and disgust at Wong’s actions.
“Who would’ve thought someone at such a respectable university would do such a thing?” questioned Vanbrugh College student Mark Endacott.
This sense of impropriety about the case is widely felt across campus.
“I couldn’t even believe it was real. I am appalled!” gasped Lettie Thornes, 19.
David Cromley, also of Vanbrugh college commented, “‘It defies the ‘older man’ stereotype of who would look at such things and makes it a great deal more relevant to a young student population.”
However, Ama Samra, potential Vanbrugh JCRC candidate, wants York students “to ensure that the reputation of the University does not suffer by consequence.” She pointed out that this was not an accurate depiction of University life; urging students to “continue both with academic work and supporting local communities, which created the original image York deserved!”
Wong pleaded guilty to 17 charges of making child pornography between July 15, 2008 and March 19, 2009.
He will be sentenced at York Crown Court on December 13 due to the severity of his case.
