York students do “Big Squat” on World Toilet Day

Big Squat
The Big Squat
Saturday, 20th November 2010
Students turned heads on Friday as they crouched around a toilet in broad daylight at Market Square for one minute during an event known as the “Big Squat”.

This event was part of the International Development Society’s (IDS) campaign to raise awareness on those suffering from poor sanitation around the world in conjunction with this year’s World Toilet Day.

At the centre of attention was a vintage toilet- the society’s attempt to attract students to sign up to the “End Water Poverty” petition. With 2.5 billion people worldwide living without safe sanitation, the petition is to emphasise the want for change.

IDS Vice Chair of Campaigning, George Viner, who was co-running the campaign, told the Yorker, “This is a big issue for donor countries. We just want to create a signal to students as to what aid should be spent on. I’m sure we have raised awareness and hopefully this will make a difference.”

By 1 pm, nigh-on 200 students had signed up to the campaign not least due to the enticement of the day’s main event, the one minute “Big Squat”.

IDS Vice Chair of Volunteering, Rhian Davies stressed that the day was not all a case of toilet humour, “This event is in the name of fun, but there’s a massive message for society behind it, I just hope they listen.”

The IDS hope that with Friday's event, they are able to raise the society’s profile, encourage more students to get involved, and to make a difference in “volunteering, campaigning and informing students of important global development issues”.
